Whether it’s the freshness of verse the open air, the beauty of time-old stories cast in natural lighting, or the thrill of weather that could turn on an instant, Shakespeare played in the outdoors constitutes its own unique genre of theatre.
Such was certainly true of the King’s Crown Shakespeare troupe’s Romeo and Juliet, staged as a moving show throughout Columbia’s campus in May of 2019. Contending with rain, puddles, thunder, dirt, and whatever else the New York climate had to offer brought new dimensions to the troubled love story, particularly as the otherwise prim-and-proper Lord Capulet.
"Joel Meyers (CC ’21) and Sophia Seidenberg (BC ’19) were Lord and Lady Capulet, with Will Cagle (CC ’20) and Maya Weed (CC ’22) their Montague counterparts. The Capulet parents are the beefier roles, and Meyers and Seidenberg did great work with their cruel treatment of Juliet turning to sorrow and devastation."
